I worked with a large IT corporation after serving in the military (British Army). I worked as the Infrastructure Engineer resolving daily problems with my team. As much as I enjoyed the daily challenges that come with growth, I was not accustomed to the indoor lifestyle considering I had just left the military. I was contemplating whether to set up an IT company or a cleaning business. Well, the cleaning won considering my location and demand. I set up a cleaning business which entailed all aspects of cleaning – windows, carpets, ovens, general, commercial and industrial. My idea was to make it easier for customers to only contact one company that can do it all. One invoice under one roof.
This worked well and later I added a valeting company and eventually went into property investment. All the businesses were running smoothly with great teams operating and cooperating effortlessly the get jobs completed. That was the best part of my achievement I think. Having a team that would do everything they could to ensure quality was attained.
I am very proud of everyone and their contributions. Again, not every company gets it the way I got lucky. However, our leads were not improving per month. We had new customers every month but the rate was below my expectations. Yes!!! I have very high expectations. I wanted a way to increase the leads we generated per month but this was not happening. I contracted many marketing companies and SEO firms however this was not improving for any of the businesses.
I took it upon myself to learn how to generate traffic and improve our leads. It took me over a year to learn all I needed to know about the then trend on improving my business online visibilities through the various types of digital marketing strategies as indicated in my blog. Bingo!!! the marketing strategies implemented worked like magic. I kept up to date with the marketing trend and established myself as the go-to person when it comes to marketing and lead generation. But marketing alone doesn’t improve a business’s profit. I dedicated a lot of time to marketing and lost sight of the daily business operations. Our profit dropped severely, actually, it was a severe loss.
The businesses were getting more new leads but I was still fighting to improve the profit. We completed more contracts but the businesses were haemorrhaging money. I brought in 3 different coaches to help rescue the losses and paid lots of money as you’ll appreciate a one-to-one coach is never cheap. However, the losses continued.
My pet hate is not being in control of things around me. It drives me ……. So I wanted to take command of the losses. Just like what we say in the military “if you’re put in charge, you f****** take command”. So I started studying all the business books I came across. I was sleeping for 2 or 3hrs per night. I was hungry and determined to resolve this haemorrhage. I took so many courses and went to several seminars from Bob Proctor, Tony Robbins, Grant Cardone and many more. Then I started to implement all the knowledge acquired in my businesses.
Was it easy? Heck no but I wanted the solution badly that nothing would stop me. Now, my cleaning company has gone through a rapid transformation. It is now a facility management company. My property investment portfolio is also getting bigger.
We are not basing our work on revenue but profits. As you might have heard, “turnover is vanity, profit is sanity but cash is reality”. We have found ways to improve our profit without increasing our prices. This experience is what I am now extending to other business owners.
